The Original Beat: An Electronic Music Production System and Its Design

The barrier to entry in electronic music production is high. It requires expensive, complicated software, extensive knowledge of music theory and experience with sound generation. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) are the main tools used to piece together digital sounds and produce a complete song. While these DAWs are great for music professionals, they have a steep learning curve for beginners and they must run native on a user’s computer. For a novice to begin creating music takes much more time, eort, and money than it should. We believe anyone who is interested in creating electronic music deserves a simple way to digitize their ideas and hear results. With this idea in mind, we created a web based, co-creative system to allow beginners and pros alike to easily create electronic digital music. We outline the requirements for such a system and detail the design and architecture. We go through the specifics of the system we implemented covering the front-end, back-end, server, and generation algorithms. Finally, we will review our development time-line, examine the challenges and risks that arose when building our system, and present future improvements

Construcción de prototipo robot industrial cartesiano X-Y, para el trazado sobre láminas de metal

En la actualidad la tecnología robótica está avanzando muy rápidamente; los sistemas robóticos están siendo desarrollados cada vez más con mayor autonomía, lo cual significa un reto a involucrarse en este auge tecnológico. En el ámbito industrial nacional, específicamente en las pequeñas y medianas empresas, se crea la necesidad de incentivar a la adquisición de estas tecnologías, puesto que actualmente esto va ligado a la competitividad; una manera de que se den a conocer las ventajas de la utilización de robots en la industria, de una forma rápida y económica, es con la implementación de robots cartesianos los cuales son utilizados comúnmente para: el apilamiento de estructuras, tareas de soldadura, pintura, trazado, corte y perforación de placas metálicas etc. En el presente trabajo se mostrará la información necesaria para la construcción de un prototipo robot de coordenadas cartesianas X-Y, así como también la información correspondiente al software utilizado para el control del prototipo

El rol del diseñador en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje en contexto B-Learning en la universidad

Este artículo presenta un análisis de procesos en la construcción de plataformas relacionados con el b-learning, a través de una conceptualización e interpretación metodológica de un banco documental, el cual hace parte de una búsqueda sobre diferentes postulados y referentes teóricos que refieren del tema, con énfasis en aspectos como los roles del docente, las perspectivas pedagógicas abordadas para dicho enfoque, las herramientas y fundamentos tecnológicos que establecen manifiestos que convocan a la reflexión de estos entornos y su relación con los lineamientos educativos que actualmente se traducen en nuevas dinámicas de interacción encaminada a las condiciones socio-culturales observadas actualmente.This article introduces a process analysis on the construction of platforms linked to b-learning, through conceptualization and methodological interpretation of a documental data base. This last one makes part of a search about different kinds of theoretical references with emphasis on aspects such as teacher s role, pedagogic perspectives about this approach, tools and technological fundamentals setting theories. Dynamics of the Colombian armed conflict from a peacebuilding perspective

La presente investigación aborda el conflicto desde dos flancos de análisis. Primero, reconstruye su historia y contexto político para mostrar su evolución en el tiempo; esta reconstrucción destaca algunos factores explicativos de su origen y transformación en el tiempo. Segundo, desde una visión más analítica se busca vincular esa evolución histórica con sus dinámicas actuales. Este análisis sirve al propósito más general de considerar la existencia de condiciones estructurales para alcanzar una resolución del conflicto a través de un proceso de paz. A partir de esta exposición de las dinámicas se pretende revisar y redefinir ciertas tesis en torno al conflicto armado a fin de ajustarlas y actualizarlas en función de la coyuntura actual del conflicto armado. En particular, la tesis del punto de inflexión, tan popular durante la pasada década, es objeto de especial interés; se sospecha que las dinámicas actuales de la guerra, si bien no refutan dicha tesis, lo vuelven insuficiente al confrontarla con algunas críticas a sus supuestos de fondo. Uno de esos supuestos es la continuidad en el tiempo de la política de seguridad que se aplicó para contrarrestar el avance de las guerrillas y el consiguiente escalamiento y agudización del conflicto. Apoyado en otras fuentes, el presente trabajo sostiene que la derrota estratégica de las guerrillas difícilmente puede conducir a su derrota militar definitiva y absoluta, sobre todo al sospecharse un posible agotamiento de la política de seguridad en razón de su desempeño, pertinencia y limitaciones propias. En consecuencia, se propone redefinir la tesis del punto de inflexión en términos de la conjunción de la tesis de la derrota estratégica de los grupos insurgentes y de la tesis de la sustitución de la política de seguridad aplicada por el gobierno en la década anterior. La conjunción de ambas tesis, en la actual coyuntura del cambio de política hacia la búsqueda de una salida negociada al conflicto armado, disponen las condiciones objetivas que permitirían una resolución del conflicto que vive el país desde hace medio siglo.Introducción 6 1. First, it reconstructs its history and political context to show its evolution over time; This reconstruction highlights some explanatory factors of its origin and transformation over time. Second, from a more analytical perspective, it seeks to link this historical evolution with its current dynamics. This analysis serves the more general purpose of considering the existence of structural conditions to achieve a resolution of the conflict through a peace process. Based on this exposition of the dynamics, it is intended to review and redefine certain theses regarding the armed conflict in order to adjust and update them according to the current situation of the armed conflict. In particular, the inflection point thesis, so popular in the past decade, is the object of special interest; It is suspected that the current dynamics of the war, although they do not refute said thesis, make it insufficient when confronted with some criticisms of its underlying assumptions. One of these assumptions is the continuity in time of the security policy that was applied to counteract the advance of the guerrillas and the consequent escalation and intensification of the conflict. Supported by other sources, the present work argues that the strategic defeat of the guerrillas can hardly lead to their definitive and absolute military defeat, especially when suspecting a possible exhaustion of the security policy due to its performance, relevance and own limitations. Consequently, it is proposed to redefine the tipping point thesis in terms of the conjunction of the thesis of the strategic defeat of the insurgent groups and the thesis of the replacement of the security policy applied by the government in the previous decade. The conjunction of both theses, at the current juncture of the change in policy towards the search for a negotiated solution to the armed conflict, provide the objective conditions that would allow a resolution of the conflict that the country has been experiencing for half a century

O amor em Badiou: ontologia do vazio, da não-sexualidade e da verdade

Abstract The aim of the current reflection article is to offer a reading of the concept of love in Alain Badiou’s thought that mediates and harmonizes the abstract and formal background of his metaontology with his well-known interventions on this concept aimed at the general public. This fills a gap in the literature that analyzes this region of his thinking. The article undertakes this task in three moments: First the connection, which is assumed to exist, between the theory of being as multiplicity and the Lacanian theory of sexuation is explained in order to indicate the continuity and limit between them. After that, we place love in the coordinates of the theory of the event, the subject and the truth. Finally, we interpret Badiou's proposal in the light of some elements that come from Plato's theory of love and what we call a communism of difference or minimum.El objetivo del siguiente artículo de reflexión es ofrecer una lectura del concepto de amor en el pensamiento de Alain Badiou que medie y armonice el trasfondo abstracto y formal de su metaontología con sus conocidas intervenciones sobre este concepto dirigidas al gran público. Se llena con ello un vacío en la literatura que analiza esta región de su pensamiento. El artículo acomete esta tarea en tres momentos: primero se explica la conexión, que se asume que hay, entre la teoría del ser como multiplicidad y la teoría lacaniana de la sexuación a fin de señalar la continuidad y límite entre las mismas. Tras ello, situamos el amor en las coordenadas de la teoría del acontecimiento, el sujeto y la verdad. Aproximación musical a través de la interpretación gestual

This article describes a virtual environment of an interactive computer system that can interpret hand gestures as pitches in a tonal scale. The methodology implemented here is based on a quantitative approach with three data collection stages: sequence of gestures, Curwen’s hand signs, and approximation to reality. This study was divided into three general stages conceptualization, design and implementation, and evaluation, to expand the scope of hand gesture recognition. The Kodály method implemented in this paper, which was adapted in Colombia, uses hand gesture to help students better understand musical concepts. The evaluation was conducted with a population sample of 15 users in each data collection stage. The results show that users adapted quickly to hand gesture recognition and its relationship with musical notes. Times and errors obtained in the tests were used to measure aspects of execution. A set of hand gestures was adapted to a virtual environment where users can play melodica by gestural interpretation, which showed that gesture recognition can help music instruction. Finally, users achieved a high level of understanding thanks to the use of natural hand movements, and it was a meaningful process for them because it was their first experience with a hand gesture recognition.Este trabajo tuvo como propósito explorar entornos virtuales desde un sistema interactivo que permitiera interpretar los gestos manuales hacia una aproximación musical. La metodología implementada se realizó desde un enfoque cuantitativo, donde se establecieron tres fases de recolección de datos: secuencialidad de gestos, signos de Curwen y aproximación a la realidad. Este estudio fue dividido en tres etapas longitudinales conceptualización, diseño e implementación y evaluación para ampliar el espectro en la interpretación de los gestos. El método Kodály implementado en este trabajo, el cual ha sido adaptado en Colombia, utiliza los gestos manuales para asimilar con mayor rapidez conceptos musicales. La evaluación fue desarrollada con una muestra poblacional de 15 usuarios en cada fase para la recolección de datos. Los resultados se identificó una rápida adaptación en la interpretación de los gestos en relación con las notas musicales. Los tiempos y errores obtenidos permitieron medir aspectos en la ejecución de los gestos. Se adaptó un conjunto de gestos de la mano a un entorno virtual en el que los usuarios pueden tocar la melódica mediante la interpretación gestual, lo que demostró que el reconocimiento de gestos puede ayudar hacia una aproximación musical. Finalmente, los usuarios lograron un alto nivel de comprensión gracias al uso de movimientos naturales de la mano, lo cual fue un proceso significativo para los usuarios en una primera experiencia mediante el reconocimiento de gestos manuales

The practice of the listening skill through the use of authentic material in a fifth grade course from a public school in Pereira

Este documento presenta la práctica de la habilidad de escucha a través del uso de material auténtico el cual fue implementado en la Institución Educativa Suroriental con cuarenta estudiantes del grado quinto durante el tercer y cuarto periodo del año académico del 2014. La decisión de implementar material auténtico para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes en relación con la habilidad de escucha fue motivada después de observar una inmensa falta de comprensión auditiva la cual afectaba negativamente la comunicación entre los estudiantes y el profesor durante las clases de Inglés. Primero que todo, exponemos las definiciones de material auténtico y habilidad de escucha, también hablamos acerca de algunos estudios relevantes los cuales nos han dado ideas importantes acerca de cómo implementar este tipo de material con aprendices del Inglés, finalmente presentamos la metodología y algunas reflexiones que hemos hecho sobre crecimiento profesional, resultados lingüísticos y respuestas de los estudiantes

Design and Performance of an Open-Source Star Tracker Algorithm on Commercial Off-the-Shelf Cameras and Computers

Recent frustration in finding low size, weight, power (SWaP), cost, and lead time star trackers has driven an internal research and development effort at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in partnership with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to develop and demonstrate a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) camera and COTS computer-based star tracker system. A set of open-source algorithms has been developed and their function demonstrated on multiple low-cost COTS single board computers (SBCs) across a variety of operating systems and COTS cameras. The goal of this effort is to release the software and setup guide to the community in order to reduce spacecraft development costs while increasing their capability (perhaps most of interest to low-cost missions like CubeSats). This material will show the high level architecture of the system, detail the algo-rithm, various tested configurations, and results. Forward work and applications will also be discussed

Internet connects around three billions of users worldwide, a number increasing every day. Thanks to this technology, people, companies and devices perform several tasks, such as information broadcasting through websites. Because of the large volumes of sensitive information and the lack of security in the websites, the number of attacks on these applications has been increasing significantly. Attacks on websites have different purposes, one of these is the introduction of unauthorized modifications (defacement). Defacement is an issue which involves impacts on both, system users and company image, thus, the researchers community has been working on solutions to reduce security risks. This paper presents an introduction to the state of the art about techniques, methodologies and solutions proposed by both, the researchers community and the computer security industry
